With the advent of version 4, Pulse Workspace now executes as a native 64 bit process on Windows 7 64 bit and Windows Server 2008 R2 computers without the need for the Windows On Windows (WOW64) emulator. Our endeavours will ensure the very best performance for you new hardware purchases.
Unfortunately not all software from other vendors is 64 bit ready. In particular, many printer driver software packages are not 64 bit enabled and therefore cannot be used in a 64 bit environment. For Pulse clients this includes line-of-business printers such as member card encoders / printers.
However, this should not slow your migration to Windows 7 64 bit. Microsoft ships a software add-on called Windows 7 XP Mode that allows you to configure your 32 bit printer drivers in a 32 bit environment yet use them from Windows 7 64 bit. It is a free software-only solution which means you do not have to invest in additional hardware. Once setup it is almost completely transparent to the user.
If you are planning a move to Windows 7, we suggest the following…
- Use the 64 bit version of the operating system wherever possible.
- Perform an inventory of all devices that will be connected to the new computers (printers, cameras, scanners etc).
- Ask your technician to verify your devices are 64 bit compatible.
- When compatibility issues arise, discuss with your technician the possibility of using Windows 7 XP Mode.
The computing world is rapidly embracing 64 bit environments. There is no reason that you should not do the same.
